My Condolences
Notes from a try hard
Dear Sandra,
I wanted to extend my deepest condolences on the passing of your uncle Kevin. Though I only got to spend a brief period of time with him at your wedding last year, he left a lasting impression on me. That infectious smile and keen sense of humor will be deeply missed by all. May you find peace and comfort in the coming days and please know that you and your family are in my prayers.
Best,
Francesca
Dear Sandra,
I hope you’re hanging in there. Regarding my previous email, shortly after sending it I remembered that in fact, I did not meet your uncle Kevin. The person I spoke to was your cousin Greg. I’m sure Kevin also had an infectious smile, etc.…but given the severity of the loss, I felt uneasy ascribing those qualities to a deceased person I never came into contact with. However, I’m so glad to know that Greg is still with us! You are still in my thoughts and prayers.
Best,
Francesca
Dear Sandra,
I’m sure the outpouring of support following the passing of your uncle Kevin is overwhelming, so my apologies for adding to the list of correspondence. However, I sent a bouquet of flowers to your home and was unable to get confirmation that you received them. I hate bothering you at a time like this but they were 68 dollars and I want to make sure they helped put a smile on your face during this difficult time. If you could just shoot me a quick email to confirm the delivery, that would be great. It’s still apartment 1, correct? I was also informed your cousin Greg, whom I did meet, is not with us anymore either. So sorry! Anyway, you’re in my thoughts and prayers and also let me know about the flowers.
Best,
Francesca
Dear Sandra,
Since I never heard back which I totally understand, I decided to take one more thing off your plate and called the shop myself to confirm delivery. They informed me that the flowers were actually delivered to your neighbor. Ugh! I can’t imagine how difficult it is to have to deal with this kind of mishap following such a tragic loss. When it rains it pours! Anyway, just wanted to alert you that the flowers are next door in the event you wanted to retrieve them since they did cost 68 dollars (plus tax) and were meant to help you during the grieving process. And please make sure that you use them to help you mourn Greg as well since I only heard about his passing after the fact. Also, I know I’ve said you were in my prayers but it feels disingenuous to label myself as religious especially after I made such a big deal about being an atheist after your very long Catholic wedding ceremony. But you are definitely still in my thoughts!
Best,
Fran
Dear Sandra,
One more thing, I was speaking to my accountant today (as you know tax season is looming!) and I wanted to know if by chance Kevin had a charity in his honor? Or if there was one for Greg, that would also help. No big deal if not but if so I would be able to deduct the 68-dollar flowers from taxes as a charitable contribution. Again, no worries if not!
Best,
Francesca
Dear Sandra,
Since I know you’re dealing with so much, I went ahead and spoke to the IRS to set up a charity in Kevin’s name. Consider it another gift in his beautiful honor. Also, I wasn’t aware his last name was Johnson! That’s my uncle’s last name too! Thankfully he’s still alive. I feel very blessed. Anyway, you’ll be receiving an encrypted email with a 501(c)(3) form via Docusign. Though we never met, Kevin sounded like a selfless person so I’m sure this is what he would’ve wanted. And also Greg! Please be sure to sign everything by midnight on the 31st otherwise you might be liable for some hefty fees. I would hate for you to have to incur extra expenses during this difficult time. The great news is that once this is done Kevin’s memory will be preserved and I will have saved 14 dollars tax on those lilies. I hope you’re hanging in there!
Best,
Francesca
